I would like to talk to someone about this. Podcast it ideally.
The main item on the table is this, what is the cost of the protesting and rioting? Not an economic cost, but the cost of lives due to the COVID-19 Pandemic? Have we thought about how the virus will spread and impact people of color 2 weeks or 1 month down the road? What are we willing to risk? Are there alternatives to safely protest? Can we come together in a different way that does not put lives at risk that still meets our end-goal?
Close to 22,000 Black lives have been taken by the Coronavirus this year (https://covidtracking.com/race). Black people are dying at a rate nearly 2 times higher than their population share.2019 had 259 Police killings of Black People. Of those 259, 28 were unarmed (https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/nationaltrends).
Police killings are not the only issue, I recognize that as we are dealing with a systemic racism issue, but it was the catalyst that set these recent protests into motion.
Again, here to talk it through with someone and share concerns. I am not condemning what is going on, nor do I believe I have the answers. The intent is to talk about how we can have the greatest amount of impact and progress made with the least amount of unnecessary deaths (at the hands of the virus…and/or the police).
Right now, my thoughts are going back to what Killer Mike said, and how we can make real change happen during election seasons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy9io6VEt58.Thank you for your thoughts, and maybe in your willingness to speak with me.
